Lanikai is a preview release for the upcoming new version of the Thunderbird e-mail client. This program is built on Gecko 1.9.2, Mozilla’s layout engine. It is not the final product.
When you run Lanikai for the first time, it will prompt you to enter the settings for an e-mail account. After entering your e-mail address, the program will try to detect the servers it will need to use to send and receive your messages. You can, of course, input those settings manually. As it happens with many other e-mail clients, you can use Thunderbird as your default client also for newsgroups and feeds.

Thunderbird opens each e-mail message into a new tab. That is very convenient when you want to compare messages, or when you need to gather the information from several messages into one. The program provides easy-to-use buttons to access the most common tasks, as checking your server for new e-mails, classifying the messages as junk, replying, forwarding, archiving, or deleting them. Another important enhancement is that you can put tags on messages, classifying them by level of importance, in order to read them in the order of your choice.

By default, the program filters some content for security reasons. You can enable or disable these filtering capabilities.
